Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) is considered by many to have been one of the three greatest mathematicians of all time, along with Archimedes and Newton. By the age of 25 he was an famous mathematician and astronomer. Many branches of modern mathematics are still developing ideas introduced by Gauss. Gauss was a clever young boy with a born flair for mathematics. To keep him busy, his teacher in primary school told Gauss to write out all the numbers from 1 to 100 and find out what they added up to (i.e. find the sum of the numbers 1 to 100). In a flash he gave the answer. Instead of writing out all the numbers he mentally recognised there was a pattern. Guass was only 6 years old at the time!
