1. What is Maths Counts - Insights into Lesson Study Conference?
Maths Counts is a national conference for teachers of Mathematics at post-primary level, with a choice of 25 parallel sessions, presented by teachers. Guest speakers include Professor Tad Wantanabe, Kennesaw State University, State Examinations Commission and Department of Education and Skills representatives and Dr. Anne Brosnan, National Coordinator, PMDT.


2. Who is the Teaching and Learning Conference for?
It is for every teacher of Mathematics at post-primary level and personnel engaged in initial teacher education.


3. Who is organising it?
The Teaching and Learning Conference is being organised by the Project Maths Development Team; www.projectmaths.ie


4. Where will it take place?
It will take place in National University of Ireland, Maynooth.


5. When and what time?
Friday 15th and Saturday 16th November 2013. Friday evening from 6.00 p.m. onwards
and Saturday from 9.00 a.m. until 4.30 p.m. (see map for location in NUIM).


6. Do I have to be currently teaching to attend?
No. All those with an interest in Mathematics Education are welcome to attend the Conference. On the registration form, simply write "N/A" for "School Name" & "School Roll Number"


7. Do I have to be registered with the Teaching Council?
No


8. Do I have to attend on the Friday and on the Saturday?
No. You can attend on the Friday only, or on the Saturday only, or on both days.


9. What will take place on the Friday?
The Conference will open at 6.00 p.m. There will be an official launch by the Minister for Education & Skills,Mr. Ruairí Quinn, TD, and a Keynote Address by Professor Tad Watanabe.
The NCCA will launch: Research into the impact of Project Maths on student achievement, learning and motivation - Final Report.
This will be followed by canapés & wine reception.


10. What will take place on the Saturday?
A series of parallel sessions on teaching and learning mathematics and presentations by guest speakers will take place from 9.30 a.m. until 4.30 p.m.
The presenters, the majority of whom will be teachers, will be sharing good classroom practices on a broad range of topics.
Other experts will give input on particular aspects of the learning and teaching of mathematics.
The Minister for Research and Innovation, Mr. Seán Sherlock, TD will offcially close the Conference.


11. The cost of the Conference.
(a) How much does the Conference cost?
The Conference costs €30 per person. This covers every aspect of the Conference.

(b) If I only attend one day, or a part of the Conference, will a different fee apply?

No.

(c) What about the reception on the Friday?
Again the €30 covers the reception on the Friday but you must indicate on the registration form that you will be present for this (found here).

(d) How and when will I pay the €30?

Please submit your registration form (found here) along with your payment.
Payment can be made by cheque or bank transfer. Cheque payable to Project Maths.
Payment by both methods MUST be received by FRIDAY 18th OCTOBER 2013.

(e) Will lunch be available on the Saturday?
The €30 covers lunch on the Saturday but you must indicate on the registration form that you will be present for the lunch.

12. Will travel and subsistence expenses be paid?
No.

13. How can I register?
Registration Form (found here) must be completed and returned to this office by FRIDAY 18th OCTOBER 2013.
Photocopies of this form can be used.
You will have an opportunity to attend 5 of 25 parallel sessions. (list of sessions available here)
Thus it is necessary to fill in the registration form clearly with your choice of parallel sessions.
You must make choices 1, 2 and 3 in each case. Every effort will be made to give you the highest choice but we cannot promise that you will get your first choice in every case.
Priority will be given to those who register earliest.

14. How will I know that I am registered?
An email will be sent to you confirming receipt of your registration form.

15. Can I register on the day?
No. Everybody must be registered before FRIDAY 18th OCTOBER 2013

16. What about accommodation?
You are responsible for securing and paying for your own accommodation.
A map and information on accommodation in the area are available in the conference programme.

17. Any other information?
There will be an exhibition of stands at the Conference from companies/organisations that relate to
Mathematics and to education.
