Maths Counts Conference 2013: Insights into Lesson Study

The Project Maths Development Team held a Maths Conference on 15th and 16th November 2013 in the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

A wide range of practical presentations were offered by teachers. The teachers’ presentations arose from schools’ participation in a professional development initiative based on Lesson Study which captures and promotes individual teacher and school group collaborative planning, observation and analytic reflection on classroom practices and active student engagement in learning mathematics.The conference disseminated teachers’ strategies and real classroom experiences focusing on students' learning.

In addition the keynote address was delivered by Professor Tad Watanabe: Hand in Hand: Problem Solving and Lesson Study.

Other speakers included

- Dr. Anne Brosnan, National Coordinator (PMDT) who spoke about “Introducing Lesson Study to Post-Primary Schools in Ireland

- Ms. Rachel Linney, Education Officer (NCCA) launched the NFER Final Report: Research into the Impact of Project Maths on student achievement, learning and motivation.

Other guest speakers included the State Examinations Commission and the Department of Education & Skills.

The Conference was officially opened by The Minister of State for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock T.D.

John Hooper Awards Update

Irish Students Win Top Prizes at International Statistical Literacy Project 2013

Irish students Aoife Troxel and Sive Neary from Dominican College, Galway (the 2013 winners of the John Hooper Medal for Statistics) were awarded 2nd prize at the 2013 International Statistical Literacy Project for their poster Tracing the Roots of Irish Vegetables.

Mary Aherne, Zoe Barry, Lucy Ward from Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton, Co Limerick were awarded 3rd prize in the junior category for their poster Think Organic. More details >>

Apps4Gaps Competition

Apps4Gaps is an All Ireland competition aimed at encouraging young people to develop ideas and create applications that will provide innovative and fresh ways of exploiting the Open Data freely available from the Census 2011 that could benefit society in such areas as transport, housing, planning, education, communications and health.
Prizes between €1000 and €1500 are up for grabs.

Modular Course 4: Problem Solving & Financial Maths

This modular course is now being repeated in several Education Centres throughout the country.
The course will focus on new elements of the syllabus, methodology and provide student centered activities. The course will cover topics from Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate syllabus. All attendance will be certified.

Modules (4 x 2.5 hours each)

1. Introduction to Problem Solving
2. Integrating Problem Solving throughout the syllabus
3. Financial Maths
4. Further exploration of Financial Maths & Geometric Sequences & Series.

Team Maths Competition 2014

The First round of the Team Math competition for LC Honours maths students will take place in all the Branches on Friday night, January 31, 2014.
